Applied Biosystems Licenses Axeda DRM for the Next Generation of DNA Analyzers

MANSFIELD, MA -- September 6, 2002 - Axeda Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: XEDA), the pioneer of the growing market for device relationship management (DRM) enterprise software and services, announced today that Applied Biosystems Group (NYSE:ABI), an Applera Corporation business and a provider of DNA analyzers to the world's top researchers including the Human Genome Project, will utilize the Axeda Device Relationship Management System™ in its new ABI PRISM® 3730/3730xl DNA Analyzers. Applied Biosystems will now be able to access the operational parameters within each device remotely, enabling the remote diagnostics, preventative maintenance, failure prediction, and proactive notification that will decrease the downtime of these data-rich, high-speed DNA analyzers.
"The Axeda DRM system allows the Applied Biosystems service team to identify lasers that are nearing the end of their life and operational issues such as changes in electrophoresis current that could cause a customer to lose samples and data. The engineers can then diagnose and fix the problem and in some cases complete the work remotely," said Patrick Carroll, Applied Biosystems Vice President for Worldwide Sales and Service. "Data accuracy is the top priority of our DNA analyzer customers. Issues during data collection can cause degradation of the quality of analysis, which previously would not be detected until the run is complete, and can cause the loss of valuable samples."

"Loss of productivity due to equipment downtime is very expensive, and the state-of-the-art technology used by Applied Biosystems requires sophisticated field service and support," said Robert M. Russell Jr., chairman and CEO of Axeda Systems Inc. "Using the continuous monitoring, remote access, and automated device data management capabilities of Axeda DRM will maximize instrument uptime, minimize service response time, and result in a significant savings for Applied Biosystems and it's customers."

The Axeda Device Relationship Management System is a powerful and practical enterprise software solution for remote device information management. With Axeda DRM™, organizations can now leverage the Internet to monitor, manage, and service intelligent devices deployed at remote sites anywhere in the world-cost effectively and in real time. These companies rapidly gain competitive advantage by increasing their operating efficiency and profitability while simultaneously improving customer satisfaction and retention.

ABI PRISM® 3730/3730xl DNA Analyzers represent the next generation of high-throughput sequencing and fragment analysis platforms. They combine reliability, high data quality, and production capacity to provide the ideal platform for rapid, accurate, cost-effective DNA analysis. Designed and built by the same team that introduced the ABI PRISM® 3100 Genetic Analyzer, the 48-capillary ABI PRISM® 3730 DNA Analyzer and the 96-capillary ABI PRISM®3730/xl Analyzer combine new advances in automation and optics with Applied Biosystems proprietary reagents and software to meet the production needs of higher throughput researchers and core facilities.
