Beckman Coulter Selects Axeda Device Relationship Management System for High-Volume Hematology Analyzers

FULLERTON, Calif., and MANSFIELD, Mass. -- March 4, 2002 - Axeda Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: XEDA), a provider of Device Relationship Management (DRM) software and services, today announced that Beckman Coulter, Inc. (NYSE: BEC) has chosen to employ the Axeda DRM system on its COULTER® LH 700 hematology line, a series of high-volume analyzers used by diagnostic laboratories to perform routine and emergency blood cell counts.

The Axeda DRM system enables Web transmission of instrument data - such as temperature, voltage, calibration and other events - and alerts service representatives if an instrument is operating outside preset performance standards, which can indicate a potential problem and result in equipment downtime. Beckman Coulter will incorporate the technology as part of its PROService program, the company's automated monitoring and proactive troubleshooting service for increased instrument uptime.

"Beckman Coulter is rated the leading hematology service provider by hospital laboratories, and now our service program is even better," said Denny Kershner, Beckman Coulter director of marketing. "The Axeda system increases our abilities to monitor events and troubleshoot potential problems. Customers enrolled in our PROService program will benefit from improved instrument uptime and performance, while Beckman Coulter will benefit from access to critical performance information in real-time, which enables us to lower our costs by reducing the number of unscheduled service visits."

This is the second application by Beckman Coulter of the Axeda DRM system. In July 2001, the company began implementing the Axeda DRM system on its SYNCHRON LX® clinical systems, one of the most widely placed chemistry analyzers in U.S. hospitals. The positive results of the DRM implementation on the chemistry system led Beckman Coulter to adopt the Axeda DRM system for use on its LH 700 series hematology instruments.

"Beckman Coulter is an innovator in remote diagnostic solutions and recognizes the benefits that Device Relationship Management technology brings to its offerings," said Paul Henderson, Axeda vice president of marketing. "We are delighted with this expansion of our relationship. We share a common vision and together we will enable leading-edge, proactive services that achieve maximum responsiveness and result in the highest levels of customer satisfaction."
